Cod Skins: Behind The Scenes

We make a lot of treats here at Polkadog, but most people probably know us for our Cod Skins. If we were a band, Cod Skins would be our encore. They’re our greatest hit. “Play F̶r̶e̶e̶ ̶B̶i̶r̶d̶ Cod Skins!” You get the picture.

We started making these single-ingredient treats back in 2008 and dogs have been crunching on them ever since. They’re made using nothing more than skins from wild-caught Alaskan cod, which has some outstanding health benefits for your furry friend. Fish is high in Omega-3 fatty acids, which can reduce inflammation, revitalize the skin and coat, and boost heart health. Plus, because they’re grain-free and contain no fillers, Cod Skins are an excellent choice for dogs with sensitive stomachs.

They’re sustainable too! When fish processors prep fillets for restaurants and fish markets, they usually just get rid of the skins — that’s where we come in. We take the unused skins and turn them into delicious and healthy treats, which reduces unnecessary waste in our supply chain. We’re really proud of this “co-product” process and it’s become a big part of our overall philosophy.

Each and every Cod Skin is hand-rolled and slowly dehydrated in our Kitchen at Boston Fish Pier. We still make everything in small batches and craft every treat as though it were for our own pet. Our customers are a part of our family, after all. From Fish Pier, our Cod Skins are shipped around the Globe and loved by thousands of dogs and cats each year.

So enjoy this behind-the-scenes look at how we make our Cod Skins. We were the first company to introduce these crunchy sticks to the world and we still love sharing the story to this day. Oh, and while you’re at it, order a tube (or three) for your furry friend. Trust us, they’ll go nuts for these things.
