St. Patrick's Day in Boston with Dogs

Quincy the Boston O'Terrier (Photo by Elizabeth J./Sniff Seattle)

If you didn’t know it already, St. Patrick’s Day is a pretty big deal here in Boston, and a favorite with Polka Dog Bakery as well. With one of the grandest parades this side of the pond and some of the best Irish pubs you’ll ever set foot in, there is much merriment to be had on this delicious feast of celebration. Historically, St. Patty’s day commemorates the patron saint of the Emerald Isle, St. Patrick, and his religious teachings of the trinity involving the leaves of the shamrock, but here in Beantown it’s a gala affair complete with green beer, sparkly glittered sunglasses and comically tiny leprechaun hats.

As much as your pup would love to devour some green eggs and ham or a dinner of corned beef and cabbage, we here at the Polka Dog Bakery advise festive treats more befitting canine consumption. And where can you find such treats, you ask? Well, at the end of the rainbow of course, at the dog equivalent of the pot of gold just over the horizon (or just across the park): Polka Dog Bakery. We have all kinds of yummy delicious homemade Shamrock treats and canned Bangers ‘N Mash dinners so that your four legged friends won’t feel left out of the party as you tip back another pint of Guinness and start singing in Gaelic

Stop by Polka Dog Bakery South End or Polka Dog Bakery Jamaica Plain this weekend and receive 10% off for wearing GREEN – we promise not to pinch you!

Valentines dog treats

While your dog would probably totally dig a box of chocolates, you’ll definitely want to find a different way to express your puppy love this Valentine’s day. After all, the holiday of hearts isn’t just for Hallmark cards and flowers…. it’s for bully sticks and pig snouts! The Polka Dog Bakery jars are bursting with tons of meaty goodies to show your pup just how much you care for them.

Want something a bit sweeter and a little less Edgar Allen Poe-ish? Stop in before V-Day to grab special one-of-a-kind hand-decorated gingerbread Valentines with fun messages like “Wag 4 U”, “Nice Tail,” and “Good Boy!”

We also have sweet goodie bags with the finest cookies and krispies money can buy, in case you have a puppy crush on that cute canine down the street!

Your dog may not appreciate a dozen long stem roses, but a bushel of bullies and a bouquet of gingerbread may just do the trick.

Happy Valentine’s Day from Polka Dog Bakery

Hello Good Polka Dog People,

With Thanksgiving celebrations still lingering, and Christmas and Hanukkah just around the corner, we at Polka Dog Bakery wanted to take a minute and remember all the things we’re thankful for this holiday season:

Good food, good drink, good company, a roof over our heads and a happy dog and cat at our feet, a warm fire, an open heart, the little things that make this journey so incredibly fantastic and amazingly wonderful.

We also wanted to send out our heartfelt thoughts to those still suffering in the aftermath of Hurricane Sandy.

It’s been a very difficult several weeks here on the Eastern Seaboard, with many of our friends and family and customers profoundly affected by the super storm and the devastation that came with it. At Polka Dog Bakery, we stick by one another, in good times and in bad, so in the wake of Sandy we got all our friends together and created this pair of limited edition Cookie Aid treat canisters to benefit the four-legged victims of the hurricane.

Cookie Aid Treats by Polka Dog Bakery

These cans, one saluting New York and one saluting New Jersey, are stuffed full of eight ounces of Polka Dog’s signature wheat-free, corn-free and soy-free old-fashioned, hand baked, yummy tummy cookie aid. What’s better, all the profits from the sale of these cans will go to the Humane Society of the US and the ASPCA, whose dedicated employees and volunteers have been doing the good work on the ground in the storm affected areas.

The Polka Dog Cookie Aid Relief Cans come in case packs of six units with a mixed case available. For more information or to place an order, please email wholesale@polkadog.com.

Thanks as always for your continued support. Remember, we’re all on this big blue marble together and we need each other now, more than ever.

Peace. Love. And all things Polka.

Polka Dog Bakery Sweet Potato Dog Treats

Deep in the dirt there lies a sweet spud, knobby and gnarled, waiting patiently to be uprooted and made into all kinds of delectable things: pies, mashes, hashes, cookies, bread, even… Polka Dog Bakery sweet potato dog treats! Not only is the sweet potato a great source of fiber and therefore a terrific digestive aid, when it’s dehydrated, it becomes a tough and chewy treat perfect for any pooch’s pearly whites. This root veggie isn’t so sweet after all, and is also helpful in fighting both doggie and human diabetes.

Unlike their pale potato counterparts, sweet potatoes’ flesh starts a bright orange color, which provides a significant amount of beta carotene and potassium. These make great treats for dogs that may be allergic to certain things as well as pups with kidney or digestive concerns.

We source our sweet paw-taters from local restaurant supplier Costa. These human grade tubers get a good scrub before being painstakingly hand cut into thick, hearty pieces. A few tater-y tot chunks mixed with slabs of sweet potato goodness make great snacks for all sized dogs. We dehydrate the slices for hours until they are perfectly balanced between crunchy and chewy. Since this potato’s peel is nutrient rich and provides nearly a day’s worth of vitamins A and C, we decided to leave it on. If your dog is into veggies, and you find yourself tossing them carrots and green beans at dinner, these sweet potato treats provide an excellent supplement to their regimen.

A great pairing with our stuffed Thanksgiving bones… more to come soon… gobble gobble

Peters Park South Boston

Friends of Peters Park in South Boston flocked to a festival celebrating all that this wonderful space has to offer early this October. This was the third annual festival and it helped to celebrate the 5 yr. anniversary of Peters Park.  An array of activities for all ages kept the park bustling for hours: soccer lessons, bike safety demonstrations, yoga classes, storytelling and more! Zumba classes and tennis lessons were a perfect choice for the physically fit (or at least curious), while a firetruck and juggling clown kept the kiddies entertained. And what about the dogs?

Peters Park Festival

A doggie masseuse was on hand on hand to provide physical relief while Ask Dog Lady’s host Monica Collins also made an appearance to answer any pressing canine questions. Of course, the Polka Dog Bakery was there as well, handing out spooky, delicious, all-natural yummy Halloween dog treats: gingerbread ghouls, ghosts, and tombstones all got 2 paws up.

All together, a special celebration of a park that’s near and dear to our hearts. We’ll see you next year everyone!
